“…’Many of these kids on the field didn’t even know about lacrosse a few years ago, so being able to put them together to learn from some of these guys who have excelled is pretty special,’ said LICHS coach, Joe Houghton…”
US Lacrosse has named Jacquelin ‘Jackie’ Pitts and Mat Levine as its inaugural recipients of the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Awards, recognizing outstanding career contributions and impact to the sport of lacrosse. Both winners were officially honored last Friday evening at the 2015 US Lacrosse Convention in Baltimore.
“…’You’re walking through Bushwick and you see a kid who doesn’t look like a prep school kid or a banker, and he’s carrying around a lacrosse stick,’…”
“…across New York City, the image of lacrosse is shifting. Nonprofit groups have been attracting a racially and economically diverse population to play a sport, created by Native Americans, that has long been associated with elite prep schools and colleges.”
“It started with Levine sitting down with the Department of Education and then several principals and athletic directors at PSAL schools. The first institution to show interest in adding lacrosse to the curriculum was A. Phillip Randolph High School in Harlem.”
“Since 2005, the group, heavily supported by financial industry employees who grew up playing the game, has persuaded the city’s Department of Education to start lacrosse teams around the city, including in two Harlem public high schools, where most students had never heard of the sport.”
“They stare at the stick and ask, ‘What sport is that?’ Drayton said. ‘I tell them it’s a game called lacrosse, and if they knew how to play it, they would probably enjoy it.’”
